The MED-JELLY smart phone application, which was made available for free download, both for Android and iOS platforms., as of April 2014, was shortlisted by the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) for its annual eBiz awards. The awards ceremony was organised in December 2014 and a short promotional clip about the MED-JELLY app was produced for the event, and can be viewed from the following link:
The application provides the user with information on the facilities and amenities on different Maltese beaches as well as a weather forecast for the same beaches, besides information on different jellyfish species and on how to treat their stings. The application also provides users with a jellyfish occurrence forecast for the different beaches. Users can take photos with their smart phones and submit jellyfish reports through the same application. The application was developed by the Alert group and Prof. Alan Deidun and Mr. Denis Cutajar from the PO Unit at the University of Malta as part of the MED-JELLYRISK project, within which the Department of Biology is also participating.
